Getting there & practical tips
Tanjung Aru with Kids — Family Beach, Playground & Safety
Last updated: October 2026
Tanjung Aru is one of the easier Kota Kinabalu beaches to visit with children because of its open lawn, playground and food stalls within reach on First Beach.
This guide highlights the family-friendly practicalities so a sunset trip stays relaxed.
Why families pick First Beach
The children’s playground and lawn are on the First Beach side, with food and toilets a short walk away. Second Beach offers more shade if your children need a break from the sun.
What to bring
Bring water, sun protection, a mat or change of clothes, and snacks even though stalls are nearby. The breeze is pleasant but the equatorial sun is strong in the middle of the day.
Water safety
Never assume the water is safe for swimming. Read on-site signs, keep non-swimmers within arm’s reach, and treat any “safe to swim” claim as something to verify locally rather than a guarantee.
Frequently asked questions
Is there shade for kids?+
Second Beach has casuarina shade; First Beach is more open, so bring a sun umbrella or use the late-afternoon window.
Are there toilets and changing facilities?+
Public toilets are concentrated on the First Beach side. Facilities on the quieter beaches are limited, so plan accordingly.
