Tanjung Aru Beach History & Geography — Kota Kinabalu’s Sunset Coast
Last updated: October 2026
Tanjung Aru Beach is a long public shoreline on the southwestern edge of Kota Kinabalu, the capital of Sabah, Malaysia. The name “Aru” is tied to the casuarina trees (pokok ru) that have long lined the coast.
This guide is background only — for practical visiting details see the beach-zone and transport guides linked below.
Name and landscape
The casuarina (ru) trees give the area its identity and much of its shade. The beach itself is a gently curving sweep of sand facing west over the South China Sea, which is what makes the sunset so reliable.
A neighbourhood, not a resort
Unlike gated resort beaches, Tanjung Aru is a public coastal park used by locals daily. Resorts and hotels sit at the southern end, but the beach in front remains open to everyone.
